How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

Her skills are top tier—she has the hands and vision to bring any hairstyle to life and somehow make it even better than the inspiration photo. She did my hair for the trial, and when I wasn’t sure if it was exactly what I wanted, she was so quick to suggest adjustments and work with me until I felt 100% confident. On my wedding day, my hair was everything I dreamed of and more—elegant, secure, and perfect from start to finish. Katie is so sweet. She actually did my wedding hair for my courthouse ceremony, and on the big day she took care of my bridesmaids’ hair and makeup as well as my mom’s. She made sure each one of them looked stunning while still feeling like themselves. The girls couldn’t stop talking about how much they loved their looks and how comfortable Katie made them feel during the process. And a special thank you to Colette, who handled all of the scheduling. She was so accommodating with my needs and always willing to adjust things when plans shifted. Having someone so organized and flexible made the whole process stress-free, which is invaluable when planning a wedding. This team went above and beyond to make us look and feel beautiful. Their professionalism, kindness, and talent made such a difference on my wedding day, and I am so grateful for each of them.”

“Alina was absolutely wonderful MUA and made me feel beautiful but still like myself. We ended up doing two make up trials because I changed what I was asking for and I was so happy I did. My makeup lasted all night, didn't move a bit, and looked amazing in person and in pictures. I also loved how Svetlana did my hair! I asked for my hair down but pinned back with soft curls and it lasted through a full day of very warm temperatures and held my long veil in no problem. 10/10 to both of these ladies could not recommend enough!!”
