I became an officiant to support people who wish to celebrate life’s rites of passage with personalized, special ceremonies without strictly adhering to the doctrines of a particular faith. I hated the cookie-cutter, copy and paste ceremonies for weddings, baby blessings, and funerals, especially. As a guest, those ceremonies were awful to listen to, and as someone experiencing the rite of passage, those ceremonies never brought any comfort or joy.
