How much do wedding & reception venues cost?

The cost of wedding venues varies, with factors influencing cost including size, location, guest count, and, most importantly, whether things like catering and rentals are included. The more a reception venue near you includes, the higher the cost. When considering venues, try to compare prices apples-to-apples. If one venue includes catering and rentals in their pricing and the other doesn’t, you need to figure out how much additional cost those outside vendors would be to make a true comparison. Before booking, be sure you’re aware of additional costs outlined in your contract, like parking fees and weather-related considerations (adding a tent, etc.).

What questions should we ask wedding venues?

When talking with a potential venue, always ask about 1) their availability and 2) their capacity. Some popular venues book up peak season Saturdays nearly 2 years in advance—if your first choice date isn’t available, consider your flexibility on day of the week and year. While maximum capacity is non-negotiable, venues might have guidance on what guest count will be most comfortable. Also, you’ll want to understand what is and is not included in the venue’s fees. Some include catering, tables and chairs, and linens, while others offer just the raw space. These venues are often less expensive because you are only paying for the space itself, and you’ll have to bring in outside vendors

“You generally only get one wedding, which means going into the day without knowing about a lot of the tiny details that go into making a wedding run smoothly. You do the research, you read the blogs, you study your friends' weddings and get tons of advice, but still you don't know what it's really like. The staff at Deity do--they do this every day. I could write about how great the space is, how much fun everyone had, and how reasonable the price was, and I'll get to all of that, but I want to emphasize what the pictures can't. Our wedding day ran smoothly and comfortably for us and our guests, and it's due to the staff at Deity. They anticipated our needs, gave us lots of helpful advice in both the planning stages and the day of, and went above and beyond to make sure we had the wedding we wanted. Anna, the coordinator, answered my endless emails and asked even more questions that hadn't occurred to me, and on the day of she handled everything so seamlessly I actually got to enjoy myself; Caio, the owner, gave our officiant (my brother) tips about when to move the mic for the smoothest possible ceremony, and made sure my train looked perfect right when I first stepped out into the aisle; and none of the staff batted an eye when I came down an hour before the guests were arriving to say I needed help hiding clues for a scavenger hunt that I had not told them I was planning. They made sure my husband and I got something to eat and a quiet moment to ourselves, they helped us load an Uber at almost midnight on a Sunday with all the stuff we'd brought. They made the whole day feel seamless and fun, and I cannot thank them enough. Also, so many of my guests made a point to tell me how good the food was. I'll admit, I was a little nervous about committing to the in-house catering without a tasting (we were lucky enough to get a sample from Chef James on our initial tour), but my fears were entirely unfounded. The passed appetizers were genuinely amazing, and the food served at the family-style dinner was tasty and actually hot, which I feel like is rare amongst weddings I've been to. They also were very helpful in accommodating our guests with dietary restrictions, including coordinating an order from a restaurant for a celiac guest, whom their kitchen wasn't equipped to serve. The bar was also great, helped us come up with custom cocktails, and there was cocktail service everywhere, including on the dance floor. When I factored in the food and drink to the total cost we paid for Deity, it's also a really good deal, compared to other local catering options! I won't say too much about the space because you can see it in the pictures and judge the vibe for yourself on a tour. But I will say that having different spaces for the different parts of the event was great, and having the suite for getting ready (and for retreating to when we needed a moment) was a godsend--not to mention wonderful for our photos! Sunset skyine photos without leaving the venue? Don't mind if I do! The location was great for both our in town guests, and those staying at nearby hotels. If you like the look of Deity, don't hesitate. I hope your wedding there turns out just as wonderful as ours!”

“We absolutely loved our wedding experience with Chicago Winery. From day 1 they made us feel so welcome, and they were genuinely excited to host and share the day with us (shoutout to Amy!). “We were absolutely thrilled with our experience at Walden Chicago. From the moment we toured the venue with Maria, we knew it was the perfect place for our November 2024 wedding. A huge added perk that we quickly learned was going to make a huge difference in our wedding planning experience was the included in-house planning team. Kalila and Alyssa supported us from beginning to end. Throughout the planning process both Kalila and Alyssa were attentive and responsive. Whether they were recommending vendors, answering one of many questions, helping us sort through rehearsal dinner options, or navigating final meetings and details they were with us through every step of the way. The online planning tool you gain access to through Walden helps you stay organized and makes sure you don’t forget any detail (big or small). When we had a slight mishap with our cake the day of the wedding they had already reached out to the bakery on our behalf before the wedding was over and a partial refund for the cake was secured by the next morning. Our wedding day ran smoothly thanks to Kalila and Alyssa. I felt as though I did not have to worry about a thing. The planning team handled all communication with vendors and kept us on schedule which allowed for us both to be very present on our big day. I have to highlight the spacious bridal suite as it was the perfect place to start the day. With 9 bridesmaids, a mother of the bride and a mother of the groom you naturally worry about any space feeling cramped but the separate getting ready stations and lounge area allowed everyone to be relaxed and comfortable the morning of the wedding and throughout the wedding day. This was also the perfect space to be tucked away post ceremony to enjoy our first moments together as newlyweds. Walden had our signature drinks and the appetizers waiting for us to enjoy a quiet moment alone before heading down to join our cocktail hour. The rooftop at golden hour made for some breathtaking photos, the ceremony space lit with candles crated the perfect ambiance for our Friday evening ceremony, and the cocktail and reception spaces decorated to fit our vision made for the most memorable day. After the tasting party a few months prior to the wedding, we knew the food and drinks were going to be a stand out part of the evening. Because we were given multiple options for appetizers, salads, mains and drinks, we were really able to personalize the menus to our taste. Guests raved about our food and drinks. We were told by nearly every guest that it was the best food they've ever had at a wedding. Walden seamlessly accommodated various guests food restrictions and allergies as well. “We had the absolute BEST experience having our wedding at The Boylston Rooms! Myles and Erin are an absolute dream team!! “We absolutely loved our wedding at The Sanctuary! We initially worked with Amelia and then with Arthur and Kat towards the end of our planning process. Every contact at The Sanctuary was very responsive and accommodating. We loved the space, especially having multiple different areas for guests to enjoy (the chapel for dancing/desserts, the tent for dinner/conversation, and the outdoor patio for smores!) and the beautiful NYC skyline in the background. The bridal suite where we all got ready was spacious and comfortable. I was a little nervous about the temperature in the tent during a November wedding, but it was very comfortable! “My partner and I’s venue search ended the second we ascended in the historical elevator to the penthouse of the James Oviatt Building. The Oviatt venue is a multifaceted piece of beautiful Art Deco history that lends itself well to whatever event you are trying to throw. In our case, they hosted our wedding. We will forever be grateful for their immense care and kindness leading up to, on, and after the big day. We met the President Gabe first, who had his own wedding at this venue before he managed it. He made us feel right at home and answered every question we could muster. Our one hour showing turned into a two and a half hour conversation where his care and passion for the venue and his clients became very clear. We felt a connection right away. He shared a wealth of great advise and reassurances and gave us an impeccable pool of preferred vendors. We were sold in minutes. Every event is different, but my partner and I did not feel the space needed any help to become beautiful. The architectural art of the space is breathtaking and unique from the valet area outside of the Cicada Club all the way to the terrace. We saved a fortune on a florist. Who needs one when everything is already so classy? Speaking of class, the Director of Events Lindsey took point on execution and was our resource during the planning process. I as an individual am not the most communicative. I needed someone with that attention to detail and she delivered. After giving her all the venue required specifications (seating chart, insurances, etc,) two conversations was all it took for her to equip the venue with everything it needed and make it gorgeous. It seemed effortless for her. Not a spec of dust or dirt to be seen and the staff was respectful, efficient, and welcoming. I had a panic attack because I forgot to ask them for valet and she was able to get her people on it without issue the same week as the wedding. (Don’t be like me, but that is a perfect example of how on top of it they are.) They had EVERYTHING we could have wanted for a downtown metropolitan wedding and then some. If they didn’t have it? They knew exactly where to refer you. One of my personal favorite features was their completely customizable LED lighting strips on the hedges that lined either side of the rooftop. We had them a bright warm light for dinner and then a cycle of rainbow colors for dancing. They are inclusive and welcoming to any and all who come to visit. We felt valued, respected, and well cared for. It truly was the best day of our lives and we owe it all to The Oviatt. I implore to to reach out to them. I can say with certainty that you won’t be disappointed and whatever it is you are planning will become a memorable experience unlike any other.”

“We got married at the Red Barn in June 2025 and can't say enough good things about the wedding and the Red Barn staff. At every interaction, they went above and beyond for us. The venue is absolutely stunning and I loved that there were so many options for taking photos. We also stayed at the Stage House Inn and did our rehearsal lunch there, which made the whole experience easy and seamless for ourselves and guests. One thing future bride/grooms will understand is how overwhelming starting wedding planning can be, and how hard it is to figure out pricing for all your vendors. I've heard horror stories from girlfriends on hidden fees and surprise costs. The Red Barn was so transparent on costs from the start, which was a huge differentiator for me. We worked with Alex and Colleen and they were both fantastic- so organized and communicative. As someone who didn't have a dedicated planner, it was invaluable to have Colleen available to help plan our day. Colleen was on top of my 10,000 emailed questions and put me at ease in the days leading up to the wedding. Everything went so well, our guests had a great time and we owe that to the Red Barn and the staff! Big shout out to Moe as well who made sure the groom and I were well fed and always had a cocktail in hand (and a smile on our faces!).
